So I'm diving into the 2015 Gravel Pit Syrah by Engelmann Cellars that I picked up at Total Wines. I got a Free gift decanter through another offer so I thought I would give it a try when tasting this wine.
The aroma from the wine in the decanter didn’t really make me want to jump in, but it’s a Syrah. Syrahs are normally big, full bodied wines. This one is that. It shows off a deep rich color, and it coats the glasses very well, leaving a layer of wine around the glass and slow-moving legs creeping down the sides.
When the wine hits the tongue it’s fairly smooth. As it starts to move back there is spice that starts to show and as it finishes the spice continues and hits the back of your throat. The spice doesn't hang around for long, there is a slight after taste, but nothing that really pushed me away.
I took another sip and I let this one hang around for a minute and was actually kind of impressed. I noticed that there was a smoky taste that appeared after I gave it a little time to open up.
Overall, it’s a good wine. If you’re a Syrah fan I would suggest that you nab this one and use it as a starter. If you’re not, then this would be a good second bottle. Start with something lighter and then move into something like this.
