Wine Tasting Trips

Wine tasting I think is one of the best things about the world of wine. You get to try multiple wines before you even have to purchase a bottle. Yes, you have to pay for tastings now a days, but it’s a pretty reasonable price given that you get to try four or five different wines at once.

So how do I go about a wine tasting trip, well, you have to take a leap of faith but here’s what I do.

First, I come up with a plan from start to finish, typically three wineries with dinner and some downtime afterwards. (Uber can be a great go to service to move you from place to place, just leave your car in a central area.)

Second, once you arrive at the first winery, toss out everything you think you like about wine. Why, simple, you have to enter a tasting with an open mind. If you don’t have an open mind, you never know what you may miss out on. If you always say you don’t like a type of wine, then even if you ran into one you might like, you’d never know.

Third, talk to the person pouring. Get advice on where you should start and just go with it. Once you start, take your time, don’t rush it. Give the wine a little time to open up. If you have questions, just ask. (Don’t forget, a little conversation with the person pouring the wine and they may let you revisit something. It’s all in how you treat people.)

Finally, take your plan and be ready to toss it out the door. If you like the wine that you tried, ask the person pouring about what other places they would visit. Why? They most likely know the best places to visit. (They are normally locals after all.) Don’t be afraid to change the wineries that you originally planned to visit. You never know what you might fine. But as always, have a plan to get home safely.
