How Did This Bottle Show Up: Haven’t had an Opolo wine in a while, it fit the profile and why not.
Color: A nice red, a little lighter then I was expecting though you still can’t read through it.
Thoughts:
Before getting into the wine, a little back story about my history with Opolo. A few years back a friend of mine would get tickets to a wine blending party. If you have never done a wine blending party I highly recommend it. The fact that you have the opportunity to blend your own wine just makes it a very unique experience. I was able to do 3 of these events over the years. It’s a great chance to get friends together and just have a blast while making a wine that you will for sure enjoy in the future.
On to the wine. A nice red but a little on the lighter side for what I thought it would be. The wine displays thick slow moving legs. The aromas have been a little mixed. When I first opened the bottle I got a nose full of fruit. After it sat in the glass for a few minutes I started to get a little smell of yeast with some earthy undertones and alcohol. This was a bit of a surprise given some of the other wines so far in this series that didn’t seem to give off that alcohol smell.
Right off the bat I started to get a bit of a pucker sensation and it really dried out the front of my mouth. The wine is a much lighter wine then I was expecting. Most cabs that I have been running into lately seem to be medium bodied wine. As the wine progresses it’s fairly smooth over the middle but the finish has a decent kick to it with an odd aftertaste. The aftertaste doesn’t linger long but it’s very noticeable.
Overall, I’m not really happy with this wine. From what I remember, the Opolo wines that I have had in the past seemed to be a thicker bolder wine with a much smoother taste and overall more enjoyable. If I see this wine on a tasting somewhere I’d give it one more try but I would not go out of my way to pick up a bottle.
