How Did This Bottle Show Up: Wanted to try an experiment and this bottle was at the right price and the label caught my eye.

Color: Decent Red

Thoughts:

I wanted to pick up a wine that was a little less expensive then what I’ve been drinking for a good while know. I thought, lets get a wine that’s under $5, drink a little right out of the bottle and then toss the others into the decanter that I have and do a “double decant” on this wine.

Here’s what I started out with.

- 2 Freshly shinned glasses (I like shinning glasses for some reason)

- 1 Bottle of sub $5 wine.

- 1 Decanter.

I poured one big glass of wine first, then decanted the rest, here’s what I found.

First glass, no decanting, the results:

It smelled like a cheaper bottle of wine that is for sure. Seemed like there was a good amount of alcohol on it. It coated the glass very well and produced some pretty big, slow moving legs, something I wasn’t expecting this. It’s a decently light to medium bodied one. The color is what you would expect for a wine from this region. It did hit pretty hard on the first sip, not a lot of pucker factor in the front of the mouth. The overall taste was pretty mild and the finish was pretty easy and there wasn’t much of an aftertaste. This glass is about what I would expect straight out of the bottle on a bottle of this price.

Second glass, double decant, the results:

The aromas were much more open on this glass and the alcohol was not near as prevalent. Interestingly enough, it coated the glass just as well as the first glass but the legs didn’t take near as long to form and they seemed to be faster moving. The wine was much more settle right out of the glass and didn’t have near the amount of pucker factor. The middle was still pretty smooth but the ending seemed to have a little more bite to it. There was a little bit of an aftertaste but nothing that really lingered.

Overall I would say the decanter improved the wine some, the overall taste stayed the same but seemed to soften a bit. If you have a decanter and a little time on your hands, I recommend that you give this experiment a try. You don't have to do it with a sub $5 bottle but go for something a little lower then your standard

price range. If you give this a try be sure and let us know how it went.
